When your IPTV subscription is activated, you usually receive login details in one or both of two formats: an M3U playlist link or Xtream Codes credentials (a server URL, username and password). Both give you the same channels and library. The difference is in how your player app talks to the server, and that affects loading speed, the programme guide and the overall experience.
This guide explains both in plain terms, compares them side by side and covers the errors people hit most often.
What is an M3U playlist?
M3U is a simple text-file format that lists media streams. An IPTV M3U file is essentially a long list where every entry has a channel name, an optional logo and group, and the stream address. Your provider gives you a URL that points to this file, and it looks roughly like this:
http://server-address:port/get.php?username=XXXX&password=XXXX&type=m3u_plus&output=ts
When you add it to a player, the app downloads the whole list in one go and builds your channel menu from it.
Advantages of M3U
- Works almost everywhere. Nearly every player supports M3U, including general media players such as VLC.
- Easy to share between your own devices. One link, paste it in, done.
- Editable. Advanced users can filter or reorder the list with playlist-editing tools.
Disadvantages of M3U
- Large file, slower loading. With 26,000+ live channels and 66,000+ movies and series, a full playlist can be very large. Low-power devices may take a long time to load it or even crash.
- EPG needs a separate link. The programme guide usually has to be added as its own XMLTV URL.
- Less organised VOD. Movies and series often appear as long flat lists rather than proper libraries with posters and episodes.
- Manual refresh. Some apps only see new content when you reload the playlist.
What is Xtream Codes?
"Xtream Codes" is the common name for an API-based login. Instead of downloading one huge file, the player logs in with three details:
- Server URL, for example
http://server-address:port - Username
- Password
The app then asks the server for what it needs, when it needs it: the category list, then the channels in a category, then the guide for those channels, then the details of a film when you open it.
Advantages of Xtream Codes
- Faster and lighter. Data loads on demand, so even large catalogues open quickly on a Fire Stick or older Smart TV.
- EPG is built in. The guide arrives automatically, with no extra link to configure.
- Proper VOD menus. Films and series appear with posters, descriptions, seasons and episodes.
- Always current. New channels and titles show up without re-importing anything.
- Account info in the app. Most players display your expiry date and connection count.
Disadvantages of Xtream Codes
- Needs a compatible player. General media players like VLC do not support it.
- Three fields to type correctly. A small typo in the URL is the most common cause of login failure.
Side-by-side comparison
| M3U playlist | Xtream Codes | |
|---|---|---|
| Login format | One long URL | Server URL, username, password |
| Loading speed | Slower with large lists | Fast, loads on demand |
| Programme guide (EPG) | Separate link usually needed | Included automatically |
| Movies and series | Flat lists | Full library with posters and episodes |
| New content | May need a manual refresh | Appears automatically |
| App support | Almost universal | Most dedicated IPTV players |
Which player apps support which?
- IPTV Smarters Pro: both. Choose "Login with Xtream Codes API" for the best experience.
- TiviMate: both. Xtream gives you the guide and VOD sections with no extra setup.
- XCIPTV: built around Xtream Codes, also accepts M3U.
- VLC: M3U only. Fine for a quick test on a computer, but it has no proper guide.

Our recommendation
Use Xtream Codes whenever your app supports it. It loads faster, gives you a working programme guide straight away and turns the on-demand library into something you can actually browse. Keep the M3U link for situations where Xtream is not available, such as VLC on a computer or a basic Smart TV app that only accepts playlists.
Setting up each format: what to enter where
In most players the login screen asks you to choose a method first. Here is what goes where:
- Xtream Codes: choose "Xtream Codes API" or "Xtream login". Enter any name you like for the profile, then the username, password and server URL exactly as supplied. Leave out anything after the port number.
- M3U: choose "M3U URL" or "Playlist URL" and paste the full link, including everything after the question mark. If the app has a separate EPG field, paste the guide link there.
- Let it load. The first load takes longest, because the app is building its channel and library index. Leave it for a minute before deciding something is wrong.
Once logged in, open the settings and set your preferred stream format. Many players let you pick between TS and HLS outputs. TS usually switches channels faster, while HLS can be more tolerant of unstable Wi-Fi. If you see frequent freezing, trying the other format is a quick test before anything else, and our buffering guide covers the rest.
Common errors and how to fix them
"Invalid username or password"
Copy and paste the details rather than retyping them, and check for spaces at the start or end. Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
"Server not found" or nothing loads
Check the server URL carefully. It must include http:// and the correct port number, with no trailing /get.php part. That belongs to the M3U link, not the Xtream URL.
Playlist takes forever to load or the app crashes
This is the classic M3U problem on low-memory devices. Switch to Xtream Codes, or ask support for a filtered playlist containing only the categories you watch.
No programme guide
On M3U, add the separate EPG link your provider supplies. On Xtream, update the EPG from the app settings and check the time-zone offset. Our EPG guide covers this step by step.
"Maximum connections reached"
Another device on your account is already playing. Close it fully, or read about how many connections you need.
Frequently asked questions
Do M3U and Xtream give me different channels?
No. Both formats connect to the same account, so the channels, films and series are identical.
Can I use M3U on one device and Xtream on another?
Yes. Each active stream counts toward your connection limit, whichever format the device uses.
Is Xtream Codes the same as the old software of that name?
The name comes from an older panel product, but today "Xtream Codes" simply describes the login method that most IPTV players and providers use.
Which format do I get with a subscription?
You receive both, so you can choose per device. If you want to try them first, start a free trial, or compare plans on the pricing page.
